The report "Coastal Blue Carbon Opportunity Assessment for the Snohomish Estuary: The Climate Benefits of Estuary Restoration" was undertaken by Restore America's Estuaries, Environmental Science Associates, EarthCorps, and Western Washington University. We find that planned restoration of 1,353 hectares of tidal wetlands in the Snohomish Estuary in Puget Sound, Washington, would result in the sequestration of 2.55 million tons of CO2 over 100 years – equivalent to the one-year emissions of 500,000 cars each driving 12,000 miles. Full restoration of the estuary, 4,393 hectares, would result in a total sequestration of 8.9 million tons of CO2 over 100 years.
