With potential savings offer of 50% to 70%, LED lighting has been recognized as one of the most actionable technologies for cities to transition to a low carbon economy and peak emissions in the next decade. The LightSavers Project, an initiative of The Climate Group, is a ground-breaking global trial of LED streetlighting that showcased how LEDs are ready for large-scale roll out. Despite its remarkable success, the group identified barriers that still remain therefore it established a Global LED Consultation. Findings in this consultation revealed that while technological barriers have largely been overcome, specific challenges remain around lack of capacity to address individual city circumstances and identify the most appropriate adoption strategy. Having been established this, the LED Scale-up calls for every city and utility in the world to switch to LED streetlighting (or as energy efficient as) by 2025 – and for policymakers to define clear long-term strategies that will encourage adoption of energy efficient technologies.
