Asia LEDS Partnership/LEDS Global Partnership events at the Asia Pacific Climate Week (APCW) 2019

News |

Asia-Pacific Climate Week (APCW) 2019 is designed to advance regional climate action. It aims to support implementation of Asia-Pacific countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement on climate change and action to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). APCW will take place in United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok, Thailand, 2 to 6 September 2019. APCW is envisioned as an important stepping stone to the 2019 Climate Action Summit organized by the UN Secretary-General on 23 September 2019, New York and to the UN Climate Change Conference COP25 in Chile in December. The APCW is organized by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), UN Environment, UNEP DTU Partnership, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Institute for Global Environment Strategies (IGES) and Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN).

The Asia LEDS Partnership (ALP) and LEDS Global Partnership (LEDS GP) in association with other partners are organizing several events at the APCW 2019.

Energy Transition

The session on Energy Transition is planned to be held on 5 September 2019, Thursday, 9 AM to 11.25 AM at the conference room 1

The session is organized in association with International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN 21), UNDP, UN Environment, UNESCAP, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and World Resources Institute (WRI).

The session will showcase the efforts of Asian and Pacific countries in leading a transition to low carbon, resilient energy systems, especially scaling-up use of renewable energy technologies; and to discuss mechanisms for scaling up investments from the public and private sectors to support this energy transition.

Side Event on ‘Clean Mobility and Renewable Energy Integration through Energy Storage’

Besides, the ALP and LEDS GP are also organising a side event on ‘Clean Mobility and Renewable Energy Integration through Energy Storage’ on 4 September 2019, Wednesday from 12.30 PM to 1.35 PM.

The side event aims to give the participants an understanding of the linkages between clean mobility and large scale integration of renewable energy enabled by utility scale energy storage. The event will comprise a group exercise with representatives from countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

The targeted participants are representatives from regional, national and sub national stakeholders in the Asia pacific region. Thus, the event sets the stage for peer exchange of status, opportunities and lessons learned based on the past work done by various countries in this regard. It also provides a space for the participants to engage in deeper discussions on their particular priorities, challenges and opportunities in clean mobility, system flexibility for renewable energy scale up and utility-scale battery storage.

Participants will also learn about peer-learning, knowledge exchange opportunities and how to access other tools and expert advisory services under the ALP CoPs.

The agenda for the side event can be accessed here
