HO CHI MINH CITY, October 28, 2015 – The Asia LEDS Partnership Regional Workshop on Mobilizing Investment for Low Emission Development in Asia’s Agricultural Sector convened on October 28, 2015 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Stakeholders from regional government agencies, private sector, and non-governmental organizations came together to share experiences on effective ways to accelerate investment in low-emission development in agriculture, particularly in the crop production and processing sub-sector.
The workshop will help public and private sector stakeholders better understand key issues and actions to advance LEDS and green growth in the agriculture sector. There will be discussions on proven financial tools designed to raise funds in support of LEDS in crop production and processing, and in particular those which engage the private sector.
“Transitioning to low-emission development is at the core of Vietnam’s national green growth strategy, and is a pathway to continued economic prosperity within the region. Vietnam is pleased to host this Asia LEDS Partnership workshop that brings together our partners from across the region to explore together how we can advance our ambitions for green investment in the agriculture sector and meet the respective needs of our countries in a sustainable manner” noted Vice-Minister Nguyen The Phuong of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in his opening speech.
In response to accelerating environmental degradation and the growing threat of climate change, an increasing number of countries in Asia are moving towards a more sustainable, low-carbon development model. Achieving green growth requires a significant shift in investment and identifying and accessing new sources of climate change funding, as well as mainstreaming climate and environmental aspects into business financing strategies, remain key challenges for governments, businesses, and other organizations that seek to implement low-carbon strategies, plans, and projects.
This workshop is organized by the Asia Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS) Partnership and is hosted by the Vietnam Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), the World Bank (WB), and LEDS Global Partnership Working Groups on Finance and Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use, and other partners.
